HOW WE WORK

Our session content explained

Our training sessions are specifically designed and tailored to suit individual player and squad needs. After squad assessment has taken place in consultation with managers and players, the session content can then be planned from the areas highlighted.

The stage of the season that sessions are taking place is taken into consideration along with the age and ability level of the players.

Block bookings of six or twelve sessions can be made which can include a combination of the three major components involved in football training sessions, or sessions can have an in-depth focus on one of these individual components.

Our three major sessions components are:

Individual player skill development training

The Football Development Programme team have designed a framework for improving skill development which encompasses the whole range of core skills required for football.

Breaking these skills down into ten bite-sized training sessions enables each session to cover a core skill providing drills to practice these skills.

The sessions build progressively upon each other from week to week and over the twelve weeks provide an opportunity for players to work on and hone these skills, building a platform for continued practice to take place.

The sessions also challenge players through highlighting their strengths and weaknesses, presenting players with an opportunity to develop their game and improve every aspect of it.

You can book a block of six or twelve sessions of skill development training for your team. Alternatively, twelve sessions can include a combination of all three components: skill development, team development and football fitness training.

Team development

Team development sessions involve working on the collective and individual player skills required to make a set of individuals into effective and cohesive team.

Awareness and understanding of team-mates roles within the bigger picture, as well as understanding your own role within the team will enable a team to function as an effective unit, maximising its full potential.

Football fitness training

Football fitness sessions are designed to bring players and teams to the peak level of their fitness in order to produce the most effective performances on the pitch.

Fitness sessions can take place at any stage of the season and are tailored to suit the stage of the season that your squad is at. Football fitness sessions can begin with a health and fitness assessment, which provides players with a health and fitness MOT, working and developing every aspect of fitness.

Work on improving aspects of football fitness such as acceleration, reaction time, mobility and agility, speed endurance, aerobic fitness, core fitness and recovery time to name a few can also be included within sessions.

Session content:

  • SQUAD HEALTH AND FITNESS TEST
  • These tests can take place just before pre-season time, mid or end of season assessing player’s fitness levels and looking where improvement can be made. Without a constant record of what individual player and squad fitness levels are, there is no way of aiming to improve fitness levels, as there is no measurement to improve upon.

An initial session spent recording down each player’s health and fitness results can enable a programme of fitness to be designed for your team. This will aim at improving individual players and squad fitness in the areas of aerobic fitness, speed and acceleration, endurance, plyometric training, upper body strength and flexibility.

After the fitness programme has been completed (usually taking six to eight weeks) the players are then re-tested and their results compared to their previous results.

Aerobic fitness tests can include:

  • The bleep test
  • The bleep test is an ideal way of testing footballer fitness levels as it mirrors the short bursts of speed and endurance required within a game.

The test consists of 23 levels with each level lasting approximately 1 minute requiring the player to run between the 20 metre distance at the pace set by the beeps. After each level, the beeps shorten requiring the player to increase their speed to complete the distance. A single beep indicates the end of a length and three beeps indicate the start of the next level.

  • The Cooper test
  • Designed by Kenneth Cooper in 1968 for US military use, the Cooper test provides a valid measurement of aerobic capacity by running as far as possible within 12 minutes, requiring pacing and a near sustained maximal effort throughout.

It is not recommended for beginners but for athletes wanting to measure their aerobic capacity and to have a means of recording their current fitness with a view to improving it.

  • The Shuttle run
  • Cones are placed at measured distances apart increasing in distance. Players are required to complete the run in the fastest time possible.

This test measures anaerobic fitness and includes changes of direction, causing the player to work at their maximum whilst accelerating and changing speed.

  • Health checks and screening
  • Health tests for players can include:

    • Resting heart rates
    • Height and weight ratios
    • Blood pressure readings
    • Body mass index testing
    • Waist to hip ratio

Aspects of fitness worked on within football fitness sessions include:

  • Reaction training
  • Agility and balance sessions
  • Speed training
  • Speed endurance
  • Aerobic endurance training
  • Position-specific fitness
  • Plyometric training
  • Core training
  • Upper body strengthening
  • Stretching and flexibility work
